Abby Burtner (she/her)
Officer 4th year, Biochemistry [email protected] I've been deeply involved with the UW Biology Department since joining the Santana Lab during my first year at UW, where I studied bat and squirrel evolution. I've since transitioned to Biochemistry research where I'm working on designing more effective vaccines, but at my core I'm a biologist. My experiences in diverse labs and as an Undergraduate Research Leader have inspired me to want to increase equity and inclusion in research, especially starting with our home biology department. Outside of research and academics, I'm an avid runner (and president of Husky Running Club) and hiker. Please reach out if you have any questions for me! Siri Manvi (she/her)
Officer 3rd year, MCD Biology [email protected] I first got involved with BSE after seeing Instagram posts about their journal clubs. I loved BSE's goal of holding a space to have open conversations and learning more about the diverse situations of people pursuing STEM. My goals after graduation are attending graduate school and pursuing new experiences in STEM. Although I don't plan on going into healthcare, medical anthropology and public health classes have been some of my favorites at UW because of the focus on topics like cultural understanding, equitable practices, and promoting diversity. Likewise, I hope to grow the welcoming environment and thoughtful discussions of past journal clubs as an officer this year! Katie Schneider (she/her)
Officer 3rd year, MCD Biology [email protected] I found out about BSE through biology department emails. I want to be part of their mission to make STEM more accessible at UW. I have done research in the Singhvi Lab at Fred Hutch. I hope to do research after graduation. Isabelle Ngo (any pronouns)
Officer 2nd year, Biochemistry [email protected] I found BSE when I was hunting down RSOs, and through exploring the website the values really resonated with me about creating a safe and equal space for people in STEM. I really wanted to be a good representation of these values because I myself understand the importance of good strong role models of people in STEM through my sister and my dad. I currently do research at the UW Medical Center Roosevelt in a toxicology lab researching. I also currently am volunteering at the UW Medical Center Montlake location. I am hoping to head down the medicinal route! |

Officer 4th year, MCD Biology [email protected] Hey y'all! While at the UW I first became involved with the biology department during my second year when I joined the Steinbrenner lab working to understand the mechanisms of plant immunity. Since then I have joined the Baker lab where I aim to design tools to better study the complexities of biological systems. I hope we build an inclusive community full of diverse thinkers and doers as we work together to make Biology and STEM as a whole more equitable. Outside of classes I love to get out in nature and go for a run or hike, read or write sci-fi (would appreciate any recommendations), plant, or spend time with my friends and family. I look forward to the rest of this year and feel free to reach out! Callum Fallside (he/him)
Officer 1st year, Environmental Science and Resource Management [email protected] Since this is my first year at UW, I was looking for ways to involve myself with students inclusion while still staying STEM orientated. BSE was the perfect match as I visited it’s dawgdaze presentation and got involved because of their promotion of inclusion and equity within the biology/STEM fields. My college career goals are getting involved in research specifically within the marine or climate fields and hopefully pursue graduate school after graduation. Amy Yang (she/her)
Officer 1st year, MCD Biology [email protected] I learned about BSE through a close friend who had taken part in the Biology Networking Nights. The club's alignment with my values and aspirations, particularly in promoting equity and diversity within the field of biology, overall inspired me to join the officer team. In the past, I worked on biology research with the Bellevue College Biology Club, and my post-graduation plans revolve around doing cancer research. |
